Adventure & discovery
New surroundings make me pay attention and test what I can do.
TRAVEL & DISCOVERY
I travel for the adventure, the people and the chance to see familiar assumptions differently.
Some journeys stretch across countries; others start with a conversation or an unexpected turn. This is a small selection from my travels, with more stories on the blog.

WHY I TRAVEL
Travel takes me outside the familiar. I enjoy its uncertainty, the challenge of adapting and the encounters that happen when I leave room for a little wandering.

Conversations and everyday experiences help me understand life beyond my own routines.
Unplanned moments often become the stories I remember most.
Photographs, memories and a different way of looking at things.
A person needs new experiences. … Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens.
MY TRIPS ABROAD
From longer overland adventures to shorter visits, a collection of my travels, with the most recent first.

A European road trip, this time to Austria. Travelling by road offers room to explore along the way, with the journey becoming part of the experience.

A journey to Andalusia in southern Spain. Its history, architecture and landscapes offer different ways to explore a region and the stories behind it.

Exploring Switzerland as part of a European road trip. Mountain scenery and the freedom of travelling by road make a natural pairing for this part of the collection.

A visit to Istanbul, a city where different periods of history sit alongside everyday life. It connects with my interest in the places where cultures and ideas meet.

A visit to Amsterdam, with its canals, streets and distinctive architecture. It’s another part of my European travels, alongside the longer journeys further afield.

A journey to Sharm El Sheikh on Egypt’s Red Sea coast. This is a different setting from my earlier Beirut-to-Cairo journey, showing another side of the country.

A visit to Paris, adding another chapter to my travels around Europe. The city brings history, architecture and everyday street scenes together in a way that offers plenty to notice.

What began as a plan for a year away became almost two years of travel across 26 countries. Following the old Silk Road formed part of a journey that also included teaching IT skills to Tibetan refugees in Dharamsala.

A journey to Bali, part of my travels in Indonesia. Islands, landscapes and different ways of life are part of what draws me to exploring beyond familiar surroundings.

A visit to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It forms part of my wider travels in the Middle East, a region that helped develop my interest in geopolitics and history.

A journey to Bahrain, another part of my travels in the Gulf. It belongs alongside the other Middle Eastern journeys that feature in this collection.

A visit to Prague in the Czech Republic. Its historic streets and architecture connect naturally with my interest in the stories behind the places I visit.

A journey to Thailand, adding to my experiences of travelling in Asia. Discovering unfamiliar surroundings and different perspectives is an important part of why I travel.

A return to Corfu, where my first Interrail journey had ended unexpectedly following a diving accident. This later visit belongs to a different chapter of my travel story.

A journey taking in Rajasthan and Ladakh, two very different regions of India. It brings together the cultural and geographical variety that makes a longer journey so interesting.

A visit to Frankfurt, one of the German destinations in my travel collection. Shorter journeys like this sit alongside the longer overland adventures and cultural exchanges.

I took part in a cultural exchange programme as a camp counsellor at Camp Blue Ridge. Afterwards, I travelled extensively across the United States, from Key West to California, including San Francisco.

After spending several months in Beirut, I travelled through Jordan, Israel and Egypt. Reading Ang Swee Chai and Robert Fisk had helped inspire my interest in Lebanon and the lives of people there.

I took part in work camps in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Cultural exchange offered a way to spend time with local people and better understand the challenges their communities faced.

I spent time working on a kibbutz in Israel. It was one of the experiences abroad that combined travelling with participating in the daily life of a community.

My first trip abroad took me through France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria before reaching Corfu. The journey ended unexpectedly after a diving accident, but it was the beginning of a much wider travel story.
